What would be a good not-so-competitive company outing event?

I have a couple months to plan a company function that will encourage team-building without being highly competitive. So, for example, a Survivor-esque Day would be out but putput golfing or bowling would be acceptable. Those two ideas are the only ones I have come up with though and my boss wants a more robust list of options in a week! Our company is comprised of 30,40 and 50-somethings with various interests. The event is supposed to be under wraps until the particulars are announced so I can’t poll the staff for ideas. Help! please.

Why don’t you split into teams and then give each team a theme (same theme throughout) and let them do a stage play of it according to a specific genre (each team gets a different genre)…

    Example:

Theme: You have just run over your bosses cat.

    Team 1: Soap Opera angle
    Team 2: Comedy angle
    Team 3: Documentary angle
    Team 4: News reporter angle
    Team 5: Horror movie angle

Teams have to come up with a story line, plot, characters, names, etc. And each story will end up being different!

It’s great fun to see how people’s minds work! And at the same time you will have tons of ideas of what to do if you ever accidentally run over your bosses cat!!!
