The first step is to research and learn more of this business. IHere are some articles that can give you information about the wedding planning business:

How to Start an Event and Meeting Planning Business http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol153/eventplanning.htm

Note though that this is not a business where you can get quick money. Wedding planning is an intense business — just think of all the bride godzillas you’d be dealing with (plus their mothers and sisters). Plus, you would need a whole list of suppliers to help you plan the business – from bakers to photographers to florists to hotels and restaurants.

The easiest at this point is to intern or assist a wedding coordinator to find out how this business is best done. Or volunteer your services (even free) to friends and relatives so you can get a “feel” about the business. At this stage, it may be hard to find a bride to pay you $15K to plan their wedding when you are student (which means you only have limited time to spend preparing for the wedding).

If you are determined to get into this business, I suggest you check out the following books:

Probably wouldn’t hurt to put out an ad saying you’ll help plan weddings for free at first to build experience. Maybe post something about it on http://www.craigslist.com. After you’ve helped do a couple, you’ll have a much better perspective on what you need to do to make a business out of it.
